On the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II (Aug. 15, 2005), tens of thousands came to pay their respects at Tokyo’s Yasukuni Shrine, a national Shinto shrine where 2.5 million war dead are enshrined. This includes 14 class A war criminals from W.W. II. Among those paying their respects included Secretary General of the Liberal Democratic Party Shinzo Abe (at center), who is being groomed as Japan’s next Prime Minister.
