Suicide rates in Japan have been increasing at an alarming rate, surpassing 32,000 deaths in 2005. Depression is the the leading cause, but other factors include the economic slump, a breakdown in social values, and old age. Traditionally, most suicides have been committed by middle aged and elderly men, but recent trends indicate an increase in suicides among young adults and pacts organized over the internet.
